Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your first visit to Karma Hands in Nantwich — from how often to see an osteopath to what treatment actually involves.
Starting osteopathy or acupuncture for the first time naturally comes with questions. We've answered the ones patients ask most often below — if there's anything else you'd like to know before booking, just get in touch and we're happy to talk it through.
How often do I need to see my osteopath?
The frequency of appointments depends upon the existing condition you have presented with. At the start we usually recommend around 4–6 treatment sessions at 1–2 week intervals, and once your condition has resolved you can decide if you would like to be discharged from clinic or visit for 4–6 weekly maintenance treatments.
Do osteopaths treat just back pain?
Although osteopaths are well known for treating back pain, they can assist by treating multiple areas of pain, as can be seen on our Osteopathy page.
How long do osteopaths train for?
Osteopaths train for 4 years on a full-time degree, or 5 years when studying part-time, which includes both academic and clinical studies. Osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which is the profession's regulator. In order to maintain their position on the register, your osteopath must carry out Continual Professional Development (CPD) to ensure they are up to date on new changes and to ensure the safety of the profession.
Is treatment painful?
Some of the techniques used, such as soft tissue massage and manipulation, can cause some discomfort, and it's important that you talk to your osteopath and communicate this during your appointment. Your osteopath will talk to you about the techniques they're going to use. Following treatment you may feel a little sore or stiff for 24–48 hours — this is a normal response to treatment. Taking pain medication after your treatment rather than before can sometimes be helpful, as it allows your osteopath to gauge your treatment tolerance without the analgesic effects of medication.
Can I bring someone along with me to my treatment?
Yes, you can bring someone along with you to your treatment — please do let us know if you have any disabilities and require any support during your visit.
