What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a non-invasive system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions that adopts a holistic, full-body approach. Osteopaths work with the body's structure and function, understanding that the wellbeing of the patient depends upon the structures — bones, nerves, muscles, blood supply and connective tissues — functioning together harmoniously to maintain health.

Treatment may include touch, physical manipulation, stretching, muscle energy techniques and soft tissue manipulation, used to increase the mobility of the joints, reduce or relieve muscle tension, and enhance blood and nerve supply to the tissues. As part of a thorough, professional approach, osteopaths are also trained to refer patients on to other healthcare professionals if a condition falls outside the scope of the profession.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle and subtle form of treatment, developed by William G. Sutherland, working with what's known as the involuntary respiratory mechanism — a subtle motion felt at around 7–14 times per minute.

Many patients find cranial osteopathy a calming and comfortable form of treatment, and some report positive results.

In the interest of transparency: there is at present no scientific data or research to support the effectiveness of cranial osteopathy as a treatment method.
